EDITORIAL:The Johannesburg SummitToo bad the US wasn't a leader at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg. Instead, the Bush administration gave the event minor league attention, at best. The UN-sponsored Summit, just completed, prepared a Plan of Implementation. It set a goal to halve the number of people who lack access to proper sanitation by 2015. It endorsed efforts to reduce the loss of biodiversity (notice what that really means, linguistically), promote corporate responsibility, and reaffirm the Rio Principles.Energy issues remain unresolved, such as setting a target for achieving a certain level of renewable energy use. Our European allies were willing to aim for 15% from the previous goal of 14%but guess what? The US opposed thisalong with the major oil-producing countries. What an embarrassment! We wonder if the Bush administration's viewpoint on renewable energy represents that of the American people. If it does, shame on us. Shame on us.
