U.S. Government Policy: Going Down For The Third Time
Neither Republicans nor Democrats Deserve the Presidency in 2008
by Peter Stern
Our leaders appear more concerned with how to resolve issues related to illegal immigrants than in solving the urgent problems of this nation's own legal residents, who have good reason to sense that they have become second-rate citizens in their own country.
The way things are going in Washington and throughout the nation, neither Republicans nor Democrats deserve to win the 2008 presidential election. There are a few responsible and concerned elected officials in both parties; however, they are the exception rather than the norm.
In compromising with President Bush over increasing the war budget in Iraq, Democrats led by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi appear to have lost their determination and forgotten their promise to the people to refocus on this nation's internal priorities, leaving us little hope that the next four years will show an improvement in our overall quality of life.
It is as though we are stuck in some relentless whirlpool. Most of us want to escape the current, yet when we try to, we just get sucked back into the swirling tide. How long can we stay afloat before we deplete our energy and sense of well-being?
While the majority of Americans are tired of the ongoing brutal war in Iraq and the endless spending of our tax dollars for that external commitment, our government persists in its obtuse objectives there, instead of working to ensure that all U.S. citizens have decent jobs and housing and quality affordable health care.
Our leaders appear more concerned with how to resolve issues related to illegal immigrants than in solving the urgent problems of our own legal residents, who have good reason to sense that they have become second-rate citizens in their own country.
With ongoing outsourcing of work, our leaders show that citizens are secondary to making it possible for the favored few to rake in large profits. Profiteering is everything. We are teaching our children to move away from community ideals and seek to get whatever they can for themselves. Is this the United States of America that our forefathers envisioned for future generations?
Pelosi and the Democrats have lost sight of American objectives. They talk a good game, but they have become part of the problem we are facing.
In truth, we have let our American representative democracy—designed and implemented to protect and to serve the majority of U.S. citizens—slip away. We have lost our way. We need to return to our previous, more noble path, and start out again. And we need to do that now, or we may never be able to do it again.
